The house’s design inspiration came from many sources, including the typical Savannah vernacular townhouse. However, the owner did not want a typical house and asked us to develop something that would be contextual, yet unique. This 3300 square foot new construction home features varied architectural context through a combination of small wood gable roofed cottages, two and three-story brick and stucco townhouses and new houses following the typical Savannah building pattern.

​The design solution references its historic setting through form, massing, material, and the intentional alignment of horizontal features, while purposely avoiding literal replication of any specific historic style. It is a solution which is a product of its own time and place. The new townhouse enhances the character of its historic neighbors not by imitating, but by relating to the essential characteristics that define the neighborhood in a creative yet compatible way.
